More than 1,000 cities in over 80 countries observed Earth Hour 2009 on Saturday March 28th, as homes, office towers and landmarks turned off their lights for an hour starting at 8.30 pm local time to raise awareness about climate change and the threat from rising greenhouse gas emissions.

The day the earth stood unlit
To commemorate Earth day and in an unparalleled attempt to bring some awareness to the energy crisis, all over the world people turned off lights for an hour on March 28th, 2009. Click on the photographs to see how cities around the world looked with some famous monuments in darkness.

If I am not mistaken, the reply to Aruna's comment will be simple.
Heard of "power shedding" in India... That can be simply assumed as Indians celebrate Earth day every day...

actually its not true for large parts of India...for eg i live in New Bombay which has power shedding but the whole of Bombay doesn't and we pay for the power that they use...
plus the whole idea is to create an awareness about conservation and that point was completely missed here........even at a very micro level it was difficult....i tried convincing my society members to follow this for an hour...... unfortunately.... :)
