The Price of Power

Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad with power.
Charles A. Beard

One week ago, Steven Smith was the undisputed leader of the Australian team. Of late his batting had reached a plane occupied by only The Don himself. He led a rout of the English in the Ashes and began the tour of South Africa with a thumping win in the first Test. Life was good.

Today, he stands on the cusp of the unknown, his Fate hanging in the balance, to be determined by others whom he has no control over. A rabid mob is baying for blood, happily throwing stones from glass houses, determined to bring down a man who was flying so high, he didn't realize he was getting perilously close to the sun.

Paradoxically, even as the sun is melting his wings it has begun to set on his playing career. Not in the physical sense. Smith will come back from this after serving whatever ban is imposed on him. He is 28 years old and, I suspect, will be given a one year ban from the game. Much like Shane Warne's one year exile in 2003 did no damage to his ultimate playing aura, Smith's year in absentia will not impede him too much.

The sun is, however, setting on his reputation. Once someone is labeled a cheat, that sticks for life no matter how hard you try to make amends for it. Especially in today's world of instant condemnation and slow forgiveness.

I'm not sorry for Steve Smith. He decided to cheat and should pay the price for doing it. Most importantly, because it was premeditated.

Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is watching you.

Unfortunately, for Steve Smith, over 30 cameras were watching closely. Thank heavens they were.

Proof positive

I do not know a lot of things about cricket. I am sure Test cricketers have forgotten more stuff about cricket than I will ever learn in my lifetime.

But I do know one thing: if I am fielding at short mid-off and a fast bowler is bowling, at the point of delivery I will be watching the batsman and NOT the bowling crease.

Dear Salman Butt,
I was hoping against hope that the bookie was making stuff up and that maybe, just maybe, there was some semblance of respect left in the actions he claimed were fixed. After seeing photo reproduced below, I have given up on that hope.

(Sky News 2010)

You have a lot of explaining to do, Mr. Butt. I just hope the Anti-Corruption Unit of the ICC has the guts (and the brains) to ask the right questions.

(Strangely though, for a body designed for the express purposes of weeding out just this type of riff-raff, they are a lot like the cops in the movies, showing up after all the damage has been done.)

Apocalypse now

I can hear a bell ringing, and it signalling the death of Test cricket. Or it will if insane folks are allowed to run the asylum.

Case in point: The "protectors of Test cricket" are proposing 4 day Tests.

Leave the format alone!!!!

Crack down on slow over-rates. Relegate the teams that stink (you know which ones I mean). Encourage longer series in order to prevent teams from trying to sit on a 1-0 lead in a best of 3 series. Ensure that pitches retain a twinge of green to help bowlers of all ilk. Stop molly-coddling the batsmen. Get rid of the bouncer restrictions. Stop emasculating an umpire's ability to give decisions in the middle. Stop changing rules to help batsmen (why was the Mankad-ing rule altered anyway?). Spread the boundary rope to prevent edges from going for sixes, etc., etc.

My goodness, there are so many other ways of keeping the Test format fresh and alive, and the nitwits think that cutting one day from it will make it more exciting?!!

Let me say this very s-l-o-w-l-y in a language that the cash-chasing leaders will understand. 5 days produce more TV revenue than 4 days. Get it???? Increased over rates mean more commercials between overs. More competitive matches between more evenly matched teams means more eyeballs will watch. Longer series will mean that there is more interest for a longer period between two closely matched teams.

If you really want to tweak something, I suggest you cast your spell towards the 50 over game, which is the format that is being bludgeoned to death by the proliferation of T20 games.

Just leave the 5 day game alone. Please.
